Animation Canceling refers to stopping the animation a hero goes through after attacking or casting a spell. Doing so negates unnecessary wait time between attacks and spells, making this advanced technique essential in chasing, nuking, and fleeing. Animation Canceling is extremely obvious with Crystal Maiden's casting animation, which continues for 2.4 full seconds after a spell has been cast. By canceling this long, unnecessary animation, the hero can move on to attacking or casting another spell without needing to wait for her animation to end.

The animations that occur after attacking or casting a spell have durations given by the damage and cast backswings, respectively. Animation Canceling is therefore crucial for heroes with high backswing values, yet may actually lead to wasted time when used with heroes with low backswing values.

Animation Canceling will not negate an attack cooldown, and therefore will not increase attack speed.

Procedure

There are several ways to cancel an animation:

* Press "S" or Stop to immediately cancel the current animation
* Right click/Move anywhere to cancel the animation and replace it with a walking animation
* Using an item that forces the hero to move will cancel the current animation as above
* Issuing an attack command will cancel a spell animation, but not an attack animation
* Issuing a spell command will cancel the current animation

If you order your hero to attack during an attack animation, instead of canceling the animation, it will simply wait until the damage backswing has passed before attacking again or attempting to move into range. Item abilities that do not move the hero will not cancel animations.
Shadow Walking

Shadow Walking refers to attacking, canceling the damage backswing by moving towards the target, then attacking again once the attack cooldown has passed. This technique allows a hero to chase more effectively by using the time between attacks to stay in range of the target.

When performed with a manually casted Arrow Ability, this technique is termed Orbwalking.

Yes. The animation is considered useless so it is necessary to cancel it.
